The Serpent & the Sphere is the fifth and final studio album by American heavy metal band Agalloch. It was released on May 13, 2014 in the . followed by releases on May 16 in Germany and May 19 in Europe. Michael Toland of The Austin Chronicle described the album as "one boot in balmy progressive folk and the other in frigid black metal" with "some of its prettiest, most haunted acoustic textures and heaviest, raspiest roars".

The Serpent & The Sphere is the fifth studio album by the American metal band Agalloch and sees them take their progressive musical oeuvre to another level, all while maintaining the classic Agalloch sound. It is an album that reveals the band’s darkest, most meticulously crafted, and atmospherically surging work of their seventeen-year career. Captured by legendary producer/engineer Billy Anderson at Cloud City Studios in Portland, Oregon (and mixed by Anderson likewise at Everything Hz), The Serpent & The Sphere represents the most glorious sounding Agalloch album to date

The Serpent and the Sphere progresses Agalloch's distinctive post-black/folk metal approach from the woodsy paganism of masterpieces like Pale Folklore and The Mantle to a perfectly-hewn swan song of cosmic rumination. Though hardly the album fans will point to when asked to describe the pinnacle of the band's accomplishments or as a standard for its sound, I wholeheartedly believe this is their best.

The Serpent & The Sphere' - Agalloch (71/100). Agalloch is the uncommon result of an uncompromising vision and style. Though they've never let themselves be bound to one sound, their identity is strong and distinctive, even in the wake of recent imitators. With each album, Agalloch seemed to have found the perfect balance between staying true to one's own aesthetic, and shifting the style to the point where each album felt like a new journey. With that in mind, it's not surprising Agalloch have made such waves. The Serpent & the Sphere" is a well produced album featuring a warm, heavy and organic sound, which suits the music well and overall itīs another high quality release by Agalloch.

Agalloch's claim to the throne of modern black metal supremacy is pretty much undisputable. Since 1995, the Portland quartet have been one of the genre's foremost innovators, merging coal-dark riffs and ferociously chugging tempos with a sylvan neo-folk aesthetic for a sound all their own. Following up 2010's critically acclaimed Marrow of the Spirit, the band return with The Serpent & the Sphere, a monolithic slab of heaviness full of ethereal segues into foreboding folk.
