The title of this disc is a slight misnomer, however, because Illenberger's composing and playing is about thought provoking moods, not all of them sunny and carefree as the name might imply. Splashes of electrified joy ("Sunstorm") engage pop sensibilities, but there are just as many deep, reflective moments with fusion-esque passages.

I have been a Ralf Illenberger fan since "Circle" was released in 1988 (wow, two decades!). Ralf's work is absolutely creative and uplifting. Although its easy to recognize his compositional style and guitar technique, every song has its own personality reflected in the gathering of instrumentals, tempo and harmony. One of the nice things about Ralf Illenberger's music is how gracefully he integrates keyboards, percussion and woodwinds, particularly saxophone, usually in collaboration with Budi Siebert as is the case on this fine track. Its amazing to me how well Ralf Illenberger's work has held up over the past twenty some years. I still enjoy the marvelous creativity, remarkable musicianship, and wonderful sounds. In my opinion his best album. It creates such an intense positive energy and is simply a musical delight get it!

Ralf Illenberger: The Gateway Produced by Ralf Illenberger and Gibbs Platen with Buedi Siebert on flutes, saxes and percussion, Walter and Peter Keiser on drums and bass and Zirque Bonner on Fretless Bass, Illenberger created a fascinating soundscape with swirling guitars and driving rhythms. Recorded 1998 at Thundermountain Studio in Sedona. Its easily his most exotic sounding work since his solo debut CIRCLE and in my opinion his best since 1993’s SOLEIL. Some of this material features the kind of complexity that most of us would expect to hear in a movie score, as opposed to a more mainstream instrumental album, and in places it reminded me very much of Mike Oldfield’s very experimental OMMADAWN. Highly recommended! (Earl, thelogbook.
